Neighbourhood development KRAMPNITZ

Redensification of a historical barracks complex, 2nd prize expert discourse

The 140-hectare historic barracks complex in Potsdam-Krampnitz is being turned into a new neighbourhood for a total of around 10,000 people through redensification. In the first construction phase, the listed “Klinkerhöfe” in the south-eastern part of the complex will be densified with new residential buildings and thus become the incubator of the new quarter.
The urban development concept further develops the large-scale structures of the former military site in a way that is compatible with the preservation of monuments – with the aim of creating small-scale neighbourhoods.
An equal relationship between old and new buildings is created. New 4- to 5-storey buildings break up the strict symmetry of the barracks courtyards and divide them into smaller networked courtyards. This is where gardens and playgrounds are located.
The “New Square” with café, kiosk and information pavilion on the plan street plays a central role – it is the prelude to the neighbourhood and brings the neighbourhoods together.
The goal of a sustainable impact and efficient use of resources is pursued, among other things, through the use of wood in the construction and the facades.
